Proof of payment for the Vehicle registration at the State office and vehicle entry into the United States
Many truckers often get confused between the renewal of their heavy
vehicles registration and the renewal of form 2290. The form 2290 has
to be renewed once a year and that is always in July or August. When
the registration renewal date depends on when they have registered
their vehicle before.
Generally, states
authority will ask to show them proof of road tax payment before they
will register any taxable heavy vehicle. In this case, please use the
watermarked schedule 1 you receive from www.form2290.com
after submitting form 2290 online, as a proof of payment when
registering a vehicle. Please note; if you select IRS tax payment
mode other than Bank Account then please make sure to complete the
tax payment post submitting the form 2290 online. You can do that by
using an appropriate mode of payment you have selected while e-filing form 2290.
U.S. Custom and
Border Protection also ask this proof of tax payment for entering a
Canadian or Mexican vehicle into the United States.
Important: If the state receives registration application of your highway motor vehicle
during the month of July, August or September, you may present them
the immediately previous taxable period's accepted schedule 1 copy.
Remember to file form 2290 for the current tax period by the due date
of the return. See Regulation section 41.6001-2(b)(4).
If the highway motor the vehicle is newly purchased within the last 60 days then on presenting a bill of sale to the state office, they will not ask for proof of tax
payment on newly purchased vehicles. However, you must file form 2290
and pay any tax due on time.
