EFTPS
Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is a service provided by the federal government to pay the taxes without any cost. They began this service since 1996, from then until now, millions of individuals, government agencies, paid preparers, tax professionals and payroll services have utilized this option to pay the taxes.
EFTPS service can be used online by using their website www.eftps.gov or by calling a voice-based system. Also, tax professionals, financial institutions and payroll services can use special channels designed for them. It is an easy option to use EFTPS as a payment mode while filing the Form 2290 online. EFTPS is an easy, safe and secure service being operated by the government online or over the phone, 24 hours and 7 days a week. One can schedule tax payment up to 365 days in advance.
How it works:
Step 1: Online enrolment – Keep the following ready to get enrolled;
- Taxpayer Identification Number (EIN if you are enrolling for business, SSN if for an individual)
- Bank account number and routing number
- Name and address – same as per the IRS record (as per SS-4 Form)
- Please visit www.eftps.gov and click “Enrolment”
- Please follow the steps to complete the enrolment process.
- once submitted, they will send a PIN through the mail within 7 working days.
Step 2: Generate your password;
- Go to the www.eftps.gov, click on “Log in”
- Click on “Need a Password”
- Enter your EIN or SSN and the PIN (received through the mail)
- Verify it through banking information or EFTPS enrolment number (given on the PIN letter or given while activating enrolment via phone) then click “Next”
- Create your Internet Password
Step 3: To make a payment using EFTPS;
- Go to the www.eftps.gov, click on “Make a Payment”
- Enter your EIN or SSN, PIN and Internet Password and “Login”
- Follow the screen to enter payment information
- Once done, please save a copy of payment confirmation as this acts as a receipt of payment instruction.
