Third Party Designee on Form 2290

While filing a form 2290, normally many tax filers have a question about what is “Third Party Designee?”.

Well, it is about giving authority to a third person, aside from your self, to discuss Form 2290 in the future with the IRS. That third party can be anyone such as an employee of your business, a return preparer or anyone you authorized to handle your tax return on your behalf. While e-filing Form 2290 online with www.form2290.com you just need to check mark “Yes” option if you want to allow any third party designee to discuss your Form with the IRS. Once you select ‘Yes’, it shows to enter the third party’s name, email address and any five digits that person chooses as his or her personal identification number (PIN). This authorization applies only to the Form 2290 you allow the third party to be on it. By selecting ‘Yes’ you are authorizing IRS to speak to the third party person or ask any question relating to the information you entered on your Form 2290. You are also authorizing the third party person to:
  • Exchange information concerning Form 2290 with the IRS; and
  • Receive written tax return information and request for any other information relating to the Form 2290 including copies of notices, account transcripts, and correspondence.
You are not authorizing the designee to bind you to anything (including additional tax liability) or otherwise represent you before the IRS. If you wish to expand the authority to the third party designee please check Publication 947, Practice Before the IRS and Power of Attorney.

The third party’s authority expires automatically after 1 year from the due date for filing Form 2290. If you or your third-party designee want to cancel this authorization, please write a revocation letter and send it to the below-mentioned address:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Cincinnati, OH 45999

For more information, please check Publication 947, Practice Before the IRS and Power of Attorney.
