Tax payment options while e-filing Form 2290
After filing the form 2290 and received the schedule 1, the next thing you need to do is to ensure that the tax has been paid. And there are few option IRS has set for the taxpayers to select to complete the tax payment while filing the form 2290 online. Yes, you can opt whichever way you feel convenient to complete the tax payment.
There are four options to select which we explained in detail as below.
Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFW or Also known as direct debit)
This is the most common option used to pay the online From 2290 tax. You simply need to enter your banking information like account number and routing number, once your form is accepted, IRS will debit the tax due from the bank automatically. Please double check the account number and routing number to ensure it is correct to avoid any rejections or late payment penalties. Please make sure that you have enough balance in your bank account to pay the tax amount as IRS normally debits the account within 24-48 hours.
There will be cases that your form will be rejected due to an incorrect routing number. In this case, no tax amount will be debited from your account. Remember, IRS will only charge your bank account if your online filed form is accepted.
Credit or Debit Card
This option, to pay online taxes, has been added recently by the IRS and that has got a very good response from the taxpayers. Once you submit the form 2290 online using Credit or Debit card as IRS tax payment method, you need to go to the IRS website to complete the tax payment using debit or credit card. Here is the confusion being faced by almost many people, when they use this option. They miss the part completing the payment on IRS website. While submitting online filing they enter card information to pay the filing fee and they feel like the payment information they are entering is for the IRS.
IRS has authorized (at the moment three) payment processors which are listed on their website, where you can pay your tax due using debit or credit card. For more information on debit or credit card payment of tax, please go to https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-credit-or-debit-card
Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
This is another electronic payment option by the IRS. In this option, you need to enroll with EFTPS on their website, www.eftps.gov. Do take note of this, you need to enroll in advance because it takes up to 10 business days to receive the PIN and enrolment number via U.S. Mail. Remember, you are responsible for scheduling your EFTPS payment.
